Come Undone

The Vongola family is considered to be the most powerful family in the mafia underworld. Tsunayoshi “Tsuna” Sawada, is the next qualifying candidate to be the 10th generation boss, and to Mukuro, Tsuna is the key to his grand plan. Being leader of the Vongola means you have the most influential power over the entire mafia world, and if the wrong hands were to have that power to their advantage, it would be chaotic.

Targeting Tsuna was Mukuro’s top priority after finding out that the tenth generation Vongola candidate would be in Japan. With the possession bullet at hand, Mukuro has the ability to take over another person body along the ability to use all their techniques.

Vol.09 Ch.80
Mukuro Rokudo Says:
“Know why I sent all those assassins after you?
To draw out your full power. Worked, I'd say.”

Mukuro sees potential in Tsuna and by bringing out the boy’s true power, Mukuro will be able to attain that power for himself after possessing him. By proclaiming war against the Tenth’s family, much animosity is held between the Vongola and the Kokuyo gang. While Tsuna can be rather naïve and forgiving about Mukuro’s intentions after seeing glimpses of his good side, his comrades are still wary of Mukuro, even after Mukuro becomes an ally himself.

When Mukuro is chosen as the Mist Guardian by Tsuna’s father, Iemitsu, no one can understand why. During the battle for the rings between Mammon and Mukuro, everyone begins to feel the effects of being under illusions for too long. Tsuna, and only Tsuna begins to see visions of Mukuro’s escape and his sacrifice of freedom for the sakes of Ken and Chikusa, but we never know if those visions were intentional by Mukuro or a slip with his powers.

Vol.14 Ch.117
Mukuro Rokudo Says:
“The only reason why I have become your Mist Guardian was to put myself in a better position to possess your body, Sawada Tsunayoshi.”

Mukuro will never associate himself with the mafia unless there was a life or death situation, and in this case, Ken and Chikusa's lives. Something to note is that Tsuna was probably of the few people to ever defeat Mukuro. While loosing didn't hurt his pride as much in comparison to some boys (e.g. Hibari), it actually intrigues Mukuro and entices him even more to pursue after Tsuna. For a boy that age to hold so much potential, it would make his grand plan all the more easier to achieve after taking control of Tsunayoshi's body. When Mukuro had fought Tsuna, he had to resort to the fifth ability at his disposal, the Human Realm. The ability raised Mukuro's strength immensely and even emitted a black aura — a representation to how evil humans can be. Tsuna had purified this aura with the ability of his sky flames during their battle. What could this mean? Did Tsuna "purify" the dark side in Mukuro's heart completely, or was it only momentarily?

Amazingly enough in the Future Arc, TYL!Mukuro's first concern was defeating Byakuran rather than attaining Tsuna's body after he is free from prison. He is actually helping the Vongola. Even after ten years into the future, Mukuro does not consider himself as mafia, but he does ally with the Vongola against Byakuran, because to him, the Millefiore is just another mafia group that needs to be taken down. Many forget that Mukuro does not care for the betterment of the world; he wants it destroyed, not taken over by just another mafia group — in this case the Millefiore — that ruined his life. Unless Mukuro has a change of heart, the Vongola will forever be just another pawn in his life that’s allowing him to survive.
