Deus Ex Machina

Chrome is like the exception to the rule; the rule being, Mukuro's rules. He treats her so differently in comparison to everyone else, even compared to his long-time companions, Ken and Chikusa. I had never figured Mukuro to be the type to attach himself to anything, and person no less. If anyone had to make a list of people that Mukuro cared for the most, Chrome would definitely be one of the few in that list try as he might to deny it.

Mukuro had met her under the most unlikely of circumstances. It wasn't fate to me, just luck. Pure luck that he had found her because he didn't choose her out of thousands to be his vessel, he just found them as a compatible match, as I've stated before, by luck. After being imprisoned in the impregnable Vendice prison, Mukuro had no hope of being free. Due to their spiritual wave-length being so alike, he had came across her during one of his many walks through his illusions (one of his favorite hobbies might I add). He knew from the moment they met, that this pitiful girl would be his key to the outside world. Though they had never met in the physical world before hand, anyone can see that Chrome places a great amount of trust for the man. She was going to die alone and unwanted after a fatal car accident, but when he came to her through an illusion that somehow connected them, Mukuro gave her a chance to live. She had given up her body in exchange for saving her life and she was no longer Nagi—she was now Chrome Dokuro, Mukuro's replacement. For once she felt needed and finally had a purpose. She wanted to help Mukuro no matter the cost. Like Ken and Chikusa, Mukuro can see that she willing to give her all for him.

Mukuro definitely appreciates a vessel like her because she would take all his words to heart. There would be little to no defiance, fitting for a man like him. This is probably one of the reasons why he treats so differently. He takes it slow enough for her to keep up because she is easily overwhelmed. Being the first person to show her kindness, it can be rather difficult for her to acknowledge and accept his generosity especially since her lack of human contact has made her socially-awkward. Comparing the Kokuyo boys to Chrome, the way they had suffered in their childhood was so different. While the boys had their friends to lean on in time of trouble, Chrome had no one. Though she didn't suffer any physical torments like Mukuro, Chrome was also cast aside and neglected by her own family and peers. I believe that her pain is what causes Mukuro to accept her. His only cases of compassion are to those who suffered as well. Anyone who had lived good life with friends and family is deemed as an enemy to Mukuro.

Vol.14 Ch.117
Reborn Says:
“That Mukuro was quite reckless...to expend so much power to transform himself into reality.”

When Mukuro transmigrates within her, it is unlike the possession bullets. He goes as far as to change his physical appearance when controlling her body. Not only does this take up more energy, but unnecessary in battle. He could just control her movements and such the way he does with Ken, Chikusa, or the others. They have yet to reveal official information as to why, but I figured it all comes down to one of two reasons: Is it because he does not want to degrade her as just another vessel or is it just for the sake of artistic visuals that Akira Amano wants to present us with? Hopefully the reason is the former.

Mukuro noteably addresses Chrome in a possessive manner by calling her "My Chrome". On rare occasions "kawaii boku no Chrome," literally this translates to "my cute Chrome", but kawaii can also be translated to dear. So Mukuro may also be saying, "my dear Chrome." Her child-like naivety gives Mukuro all the more incentive to treat her like a little girl despite only being two years her senior. Despite what Mukuro may say about humans being nothing but mere toys, he seems to have gained attachment to Chrome in the future. Though he may say that she is only necessary to keep alive because she is one of the only few who can be his vessel (Guido Greco potentially being the other vessel), he does show worry when her life is at stake.

Vol.18 Ch.164
Glo Xinia Says:
“You care for the girl, don't you?”

While there is little development that is enough for a heartfelt attachment towards Chrome in the present world, in the future even Glo Xinia of the Millefiore can see that the older Mukuro shows genuine concern for her. The older Mukuro has come to care for Chrome even to the point that she has become one of his weaknesses. He does all he can to defend her, and this was not the first time. When Viper/Mammon of the Varia was about to defeat her in the Vongola Rings Battle, Mukuro reincarnates himself to save her and when the Vongola battle against Ghost, the older Mukuro pulls her out of harm's way once more. He is free from prison and yet he still went out of his way to save her. Chrome cannot be just another "toy" to Mukuro if he was willing to risk his own safety for her. These moments are reasons as to why I called this section "Deus ex Machina." Mukuro plays the role of one in most notably, Chrome's life. He keeps poof-ing out of nowhere, just to save her.

Mukuro's views on Chrome has really changed ten years into the future. We aren't too sure how much closer are because we have yet to see how the older Mukuro and older Chrome interact. There may even be a spark of romance due to M·M's obvious jealousy of Mukuro's favoritism towards Chrome—though M·M could just be potentially blinded by her own feelings and may just consider any woman that has a relationship with Mukuro as an enemy.

Mukuro has always shown consideration to Chrome, because even if the world does not want them, they will always have someone to turn to. Chrome is his faithful servant, something Mukuro knows even if she is associating with the Vongola. He does not just leave her be because they are the key to each other's existence (Mukuro needs Chrome to walk freely outside of prison, Chrome needs Mukuro to stay alive). Chrome is what makes us see the side of Mukuro he would never reveal to just anyone. Mukuro's changes are subtle but happening. We can see that Mukuro is beginning to learn to care for people through Chrome. Though their relationship does have aspects of a master and puppet, I consider the two to be almost like family even though they have no blood relation. Despite their strong relationship, in the Future Arc Mukuro looses his connection with Chrome after being defeat by Byakuran putting Chrome's life in danger for he is the one who give her life by making organs out of illusions to replace the ones she had lost since the time they had first met. Chrome eventually learns how to sustain her body without Mukuro's illusions, but instead with the help of the Vongola Mist Ring and has been gaining new friends, particularly the Vongola girls. Chrome may now have a tough decision to make when (if ever) Mukuro decides attack Vongola again. We can only wonder what the outcome will be when that time comes.
